“Nobody’s happy with losing, but this game [with] NC State really pumps us up,” Wake Forest running back Tate Carney said heading into this weekend’s ACC matchup. “They got us last year and we really don’t like them, and we’re excited to get after them on Saturday.” 

Despite sitting at a 1-3 record following last Saturday’s grueling 41-38 loss to the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons’ spirits still appear high with the NC State Wolfpack (2-2, 0-1 ACC) next on the schedule. 

“We’re six points away from feeling good about our season,” Wake Forest Football Head Coach Dave Clawson said at his Tuesday press conference. 

Wake Forest dropped two close games to Virginia and now Louisiana by a combined four points. The offensive production is not the problem— averaging a No. 28-ranked 460 yards per game. The defense, meanwhile, has allowed an NCAA seventh-worst 470.5 yards per game. 

The good news is that star defensive lineman Jasheen Davis returned to action last weekend and is a full go from here on out. However, another integral piece of their line, Kevin Pointer, is listed as “doubtful” for the showdown in Raleigh. 

For the rest of the defense, it remains to be seen what can be done to improve the bleeding secondary. Wake Forest Football General Manager Kevin Higgins addressed questions about the position group.

“We’ve been making some mental errors,” Higgins said. “if we can just keep everybody in front of us and make them work their way down the field, then [we] have an opportunity to get a turnover.”

Higgins also cited the rest of the defense’s responsibility in relieving pressure off of the secondary. Wake Forest’s defense has recorded the fewest sacks (5) in the entire ACC this season. 

The consequences of allowing explosive, chunk plays were apparent, as Louisiana ran 11 less plays than Wake Forest, having two touchdown drives end in four plays. Seventh-year senior Ben Wooldridge was surgical for the Ragin’ Cajuns, completing 20/29 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns, gashing the Demon Deacons’ defense.

Despite the past defensive breakdowns, Wake Forest is rolling into week six with a mindset of accountability and collaboration. 

“I can say that we’ve worked on it…that we’ve practiced it,” Clawson said. “But at the end of the day, if you don’t get it done in a game, it really doesn’t matter how many times you’ve practiced it.” 

Thankfully for the Wake Forest offense, they are likely to have cornerstone running back Demond Claiborne back for Saturday. Claiborne dislocated his kneecap in last week’s loss, but returned later to bust a 60-yard touchdown. Clawson says Claiborne is “probable” to play.

General Manager Kevin Higgins provided a historical parallel for this weekend’s rivalry matchup.

On this week’s edition of “The Dave Clawson Show,” Higgins cited Wake Forest’s devastating 2018 loss to Syracuse and having to turn around and play at NC State the following match. While belief was in short supply, the Demon Deacons rallied from behind to take down the Wolfpack. Now, after suffering a devastating loss to Louisiana, the Demon Deacons face a similar opportunity once again heading into NC State. 

Wake Forest travels to Carter-Finley Stadium for their first away game of the season to take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Kickoff is set for 12:00p.m. EST.

Saints Continue to Slip

After a tough loss to the Eagles last week, the Saints are now 2-2 and falling back to earth.

The New Orleans Saints held the Atlanta Falcons to 0 touchdowns on offense, yet still lost 26-24. The Falcons benefited from a defensive scoop-n-score and a pick-six. Despite his blazing start, Derek Carr has thrown just 1 touchdown to 2 interceptions over his last two contests. However, Alvin Kamara and Taysom Hill cashed in for 3 rushing scores (1; 2).

Kirk Cousins’ and the Falcons’ offensive woes continued, as the 36-year-old threw an interception and no receiver or running back garnered over 64 yards. Stud running back Bijan Robinson only received 7 carries.

Both teams face daunting tasks next week in desperate need of reestablishing offensive competence. Atlanta will host the 3-1 Buccaneers and the reigning back-to-back champion Chiefs will host New Orleans.

Barnburner in New York

The Broncos held the Jets to 0 touchdowns, marking just the fifth time ever that an Aaron Rodgers-led squad claimed this dubious honor. This high-scoring affair featured 15 total punts and ended in a 10-9 Broncos victory.

It was a rainy one in East Rutherford, as Bo Nix and Aaron Rodgers completed a combined 53.7% of their passes. Despite only tossing for 60 yards, the rookie was able to connect with Courtland Sutton for his first touchdown reception of the season – making the difference in the game. The Broncos defense was also able to sack the four-time MVP 5 times on Sunday

The Broncos look to ride this momentum – if you can call it that – and take down their bitter rivals in the Las Vegas Raiders next week.

The Jets have quickly become the center of the media world, with many calling their season fraudulent already. They will be truly put to the test on a daring date in London with the Minnesota Vikings.

Watch Out for Minnesota

The Minnesota Vikings are 4-0 and are averaging 29 points-per-game (4th in NFL).

After suffering an MCL Sprain in Green Bay’s season opener, Jordan Love made his return against the Vikings. However, the former first-round pick only found his footing later in the contest. He ended with 4 touchdowns but a dismal 3 interceptions.

The Vikings jumped out to a quick 28-0 lead behind Sam Darnold’s sustained excellence – the former Southern California prodigy completed over 70% of his passes and threw 3 touchdowns.

While the Packers rallied and made it arguably the week’s best game, they fell short 31-29.

Green Bay has nothing to worry about with their franchise quarterback now back under center, and they’ll have a chance to regather against the Los Angeles Rams who couldn’t hold off Chicago Bears this week.

As previously mentioned, Sam Darnold and company go abroad for a showdown against the scrutinized Jets.

He is Inevitable

Anthony Richardson went down again, leading former elite quarterback Joe Flacco to take over the reins. Flacco turns 40 in January and is just eight days older than Anthony Richardson’s mother, but he led the Indianapolis Colts to a much needed win over the Pittsburgh Steelers (27-24), handing them their first loss of the season.

Super Bowl 47 MVP Joe Flacco threw a pair of touchdowns and helped Indianapolis record their second 100-yard receiver of the season. Jonathan Taylor had 108 total yards and a score, but went down with an injury that is currently being labeled as a mild high ankle sprain.

Justin Fields added onto his surprise campaign, totaling 367 yards and 3 touchdowns. A story to watch is in the running back room with Najee Harris and Cordarrelle Patterson. Patterson had 6 carries for 43 yards and Harris, the former first-round pick, recorded 13 carries for just 19 yards. Be on the lookout for a potential change in workload…

Pittsburgh just got beat, so there’s not too much to worry about – other than the run game. They play Dallas in a throwback classic on Sunday Night Football.

The Colts play the 0-4 Jaguars who had the Texans against the ropes on Sunday.

Eagles Ownership Stake Claimed

For the second time in the calendar year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have dismantled the Philadelphia Eagles, holding them to under 20 points while scoring over 30 both times.

The Eagles may have been without star wide receivers DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown, but this game was over out of the gates, as Tampa Bay cruised to a 24-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Jalen Hurts has yet to find his mojo while Baker Mayfield threw for 347 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also finding the end zone on the ground.

Mike Evans had 94 yards and a touchdown on the day. Currently, the Buccaneers legend is averaging 53.5 yards per game, putting his current trajectory (909 yards) short of 1,000 yards. Evans has recorded 1,000 yards or more every year in his career (10 seasons) – a running NFL record.

The Buccaneers wing-clipping 33-16 triumph over Philadelphia has them looking to ground another winged foe in the Atlanta Falcons, while the Eagles look to regain some altitude against the floundering 1-3 Cleveland Browns.

Homeostatic Hierarchy

We knew it could not last forever; we knew Buffalo couldn’t continue their domination and Baltimore wouldn’t continue looking sluggish.

The Buffalo Bills came into the week undefeated and won their previous two games a combined 78-20. Despite the departure of Stefon Diggs in the offseason, it did not seem that Josh Allen and the Bills were phased. Allen had been playing near flawless football accompanied by a breakout season by second-year running back James Cook. All was fantastic until Sunday night in Baltimore…

On the first play from scrimmage for the Ravens, Derrick Henry busted an 87 yard touchdown, immediately setting the tone for the game. Henry would go on to have 199 yards in what was truly a vintage game from the former Heisman winner. Last week, Lamar Jackson threw just 15 passes. This week it was only 18 as Baltimore soared to a 35-10 victory. It seems as if they have found their recipe to success.

Josh Allen failed to surpass 200 passing yards and James Cook had just 39 rushing yards. However, the Bills shouldn’t worry about motivation moving forward, as they face off against the Houston Texans where they plan to make a statement to their former record-breaking WR Stefon Diggs.

Baltimore is going to ride their high into next week’s matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals, who have struggled thus far.

Things are changing in the NFL, setting this season up to be one for the books. However, one thing remains unchanged: The Kansas City Chiefs are still the team to beat despite the many issues¹ they face. But only time will tell if they are to be dethroned.

Despite the odds, the Minnesota Vikings continue to shine. Their defense is allowing the second-lowest points per game, and their offense continues its efficient tear. Sam Darnold is completing 67.9% of his passes and boasts a 4:1 touchdown to interception ratio. The Vikings rush attack has been respectably productive, averaging 4.8 yards per rush.

Question: What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?
Answer: The Minnesota Vikings blow out the Houston Texans.
C.J. Stroud threw just 5 interceptions throughout his historic rookie campaign last season. On Sunday, Minnesota turned the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year over twice. Aaron Jones had 148 total yards and a receiving touchdown. The Texans were only able to muster 38 rushing yards.

The Minnesota Vikings will play the Green Bay Packers in what should be an interesting matchup, regardless of who their signal caller is (Jordan Love or Malik Willis). The Houston Texans will get an opportunity to rebound against the struggling Jacksonville Jaguars.

If I had a nickel…

The San Francisco 49ers failed to put their opponent on ice for the second week in a row. Last week, they fell apart against the Vikings, allowing them to continue to gain momentum. This week, they lost to a depleted Los Angeles Rams team.

The 49ers led for 59 of the 60 minutes on Sunday. On paper, they dominated – leading every major statistical category and being headlined by standout statistical performances¹ from quarterback Brock Purdy and receiver Jauan Jennings.

San Francisco’s downfall lies within the cracks of the game.
Brock Purdy missed a few crucial throws and was forced to scramble multiple times in the second half due to LA’s intense pass coverage.
The Rams flawlessly executed a fake punt and took advantage of San Francisco’s poor punt coverage to get the ball to the 50-yard line to set up their game-winning field goal.
Additionally, Sean McVay reminded us of his genius, as he out-coached Kyle Shanahan when it mattered most – an increasingly common trend for the 49ers coach.

The 49ers were without Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey, but the Rams were depleted at receiver, again without Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua.

San Francisco will look to even their record against the New England Patriots who are currently undergoing a quarterback identity crisis. The Rams will see if they can continue to right the ship against Caleb Williams and the discombobulated Bears.

In Desperate Need

The Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys entered week 3 in desperate need of a ‘get right’ win. Dallas ended up giving its fans an all-too-familiar let down loss.

The Ravens controlled the flow of the game all the way until the fourth quarter, where Dallas realized they lose if they score less points than their opponent. By that time, Baltimore commanded a 28-6 lead. Attempting to cement themselves in the history books with a comeback, Dallas would score 19 points and shut out Baltimore. The Cowboys benefitted from a Justin Tucker missed field goal and a successful onside kick in the fourth quarter. However, they would ultimately fall short 28-25.

Dak Prescott completed just 54% of his passes with an inflated 379 passing yards due to the ‘catchup’ nature of the game. Dallas also failed to establish an effective running game, being outran 274 to 51.

Lamar Jackson threw the ball just 15 times², while Derrick Henry had 151 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns in a vintage performance. Lamar Jackson ran 14 times, totaling 87 yards and a score.

The Ravens have a date with the red-hot Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football, and the Cowboys have a fantastic opportunity to set things straight against the New York Giants.

Trouble in Baltimore?

The Baltimore Ravens came into this weekend looking forward to their home opener against a struggling opponent in the Las Vegas Raiders. The Ravens lost last week, but it was to the reigning Super Bowl champs. However, yesterday’s debacle will certainly create a sense of urgency.

The Raiders were led by Gardner Minshew, who went 30/38 for 276 yards, a touchdown, and an interception – a very respectable game from the NFL journeyman. However, Las Vegas ended the game with only 27 rushing yards.

Lamar Jackson had 247 yards, a touchdown, and an interception – with 45 rushing yards to go along. Derrick Henry had a better outing than in Kansas City, finishing with 84 yards and a score. Also, Mark Andrews reclaimed the top tight end role, having 4 receptions for 51 yards compared to Likely’s 2 for 26.

The Ravens had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter but failed to guard it. With the game on the line, Raiders’ kicker Daniel Carlson drilled a game-winning field goal in the final minute, handing Baltimore a heartbreaking loss.

Baltimore has a chance to rebound versus the Dallas Cowboys, with an 0-3 record looming large. The Raiders host Carolina looking to cruise to a promising 2-1 start.

Vikings Stun 49ers

The Minnesota Vikings are in the early running for wildcard team of the year. They lost their first-round and starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy to a torn meniscus and many expected this year to be exploratory in the first place.

The 49ers are fresh off of dominating the Jets in Monday Night Football, as their eyes remain set on the Lombardi Trophy in February. However, on Sunday, they hit a bump in the road against this feisty Vikings squad, losing 23-17.

Sam Darnold continued his career-best play, finishing with 268 yards and a pair of touchdowns – while adding an interception for balance. Justin Jefferson reminded us why he is the highest paid non-QB in history with his 4 reception day that totaled him 133 yards and a house call that went for 97 yards.

Speaking of that 97-yard lightning strike, it came following a San Francisco turnover on downs. The 49ers repeatedly got in their own way, despite respectable performances from many. Jordan Mason continued his surprise excellence in the absence of Christian McCaffrey with 100 yards and a score. Brock Purdy had 319 yards as well as a touchdown and an interception. While not an alarming stat line, Purdy’s command of the offense lacked cohesion at times, ultimately costing them.

The San Francisco 49ers look to have their “get right” game against the floundering Los Angeles Rams, while Minnesota hosts Houston with a chance to really get wild.

Another Super Bowl Home Team?

The New Orleans Saints dismantled the Carolina Panthers last week 47-10. It raised some eyebrows, as Derek Carr looked impressive, but most quickly moved on because the Panthers are in disarray. However, Sunday’s results paint a much different headline.

The Saints went marching into Dallas who was bolstering a 16-game win streak at home. Derek Carr put his haters in a choke hold after tossing for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 16 attempts, handing Dallas a devastating 44-19 defeat. Alvin Kamara also reminded many of his silent excellence, toting a 180 total yards and 4 touchdowns.

Aside from one drive that ended in a CeeDee Lamb touchdown, the Cowboys settled for 4 field goals and struggled to find a rhythm. Dak Prescott had 293 yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions. Typically, in a lopsided game we see the quarterback playing catchup end with inflated passing yardage. That was not the case here.

The Saints have a date with the Philadelphia Eagles at home, as they continue to prove themselves. As stated earlier, Dallas and Baltimore will square off in an all-important game to set things right for their squads.

Note: the 44-19 final score was a Scorigami¹, marking the second in two weeks. Happy Scorigami!

Divisional Round Rematch

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions faced off in what was the rematch of last year’s intense Divisional Round game that saw the Lions claim victory 31-23. This time, however, Baker and the Bucs flipped the script, winning 20-16.

In what was a field-goal-heavy weekend across the league, only 3 touchdowns were scored in this anticipated matchup. Baker Mayfield did it all for Tampa, but was not as surgical as last week. He threw for 185 yards and had a touchdown and interception. Additionally, he was the Buccaneers leading rusher with 34 yards and a score.

Jared Goff threw the ball an absurd 55 times, which is uncommon in such a low-scoring affair. Besides the 2 turnovers, you could point the finger to the unbalanced play calling that led to an inability to finish off drives.

Despite being outgained and outplayed² in almost every metric, the Bucs pulled out a gritty win, relying on Baker Mayfield’s leadership and a few key defensive stops to edge out Detroit.

Detroit will play Arizona in what now looks to be a fun and potentially high-scoring matchup. Tampa Bay plays the Denver Broncos with a prime opportunity to start 3-0 while Bo Nix struggles to get Denver in sync.

End of an Era in LA

The Rams’ Super Bowl victory in 2022 feels like a distant memory, as their current 0-2 start has fans questioning whether the magic is gone.

The Rams have already been through the wringer, with Puka Nacua sidelined several weeks, Cooper Kupp being in a walking boot, and the league’s oldest starting QB Matthew Stafford flirting with Father Time. The 2009 No. 1 overall pick was sacked an alarming 5 times yesterday, while no Rams receiver went over 50 yards and no running back over 28.

The Cardinals put on an offensive clinic, featured by three outstanding performances:
Kyler Murray was 17/21 for 266 yards and 3 touchdowns. He added 59 on the ground as well.
James Conner had 122 yards on 5.8 YPC³ and one trip to pay dirt.
Rookie Marvin Harrison had his breakout game with 4 receptions for 130 yards and a pair of scores.

Kyler Murray is finally healthy and Jonathan Gannon’s schemes seem to finally be gaining traction. They sent the Rams to the Bottom of the NFC West, winning 41-10.

As previously highlighted, Arizona gets a much-anticipated home game against Detroit and the Rams will try to defend against the 49ers assault.

Bitter Rivalry

In what’s quickly becoming one of the NFL’s fiercest rivalries, the Chiefs and Bengals clashed in a thriller, with Kansas City narrowly escaping with a 26-25 victory after a crucial Bengals penalty.

Joe Burrow threw for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns. A staggering 151 of his yards were to tight ends – Mike Gesicki, Erick All Jr., and Drew Sample.

Patrick Mahomes had a down day in his standards with just 151 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and a pair of interceptions. Isiah Pacheco controlled the tempo with 19 carries and 90 yards. Unfortunately, the reliable back fractured his fibula and will miss considerable time this season.

The team stats were nearly identical, except for Cincinnati’s sluggish running game. The Bengals had the advantage late in the fourth quarter, but penalty discipline proved costly. They committed twice as many penalties as Kansas City, including a crucial pass interference that set up the Chiefs’ game-winning field goal.

The Bengals are no stranger to slow starts, and they look to get things rolling against the reorganizing Washington Commanders. The Chiefs have their eyes set on a historic third-straight Lombardi Trophy. They will face off against the Falcons on Sunday Night Football.

Week 2 brought all the drama, from last-second field goals to upsets and breakout performances. As the season unfolds, the stakes will only get higher – so stay tuned for more!

Playing the Long Game

The 49ers made a surprise decision when they listed McCaffrey as inactive shortly before their opening game against the New York Jets.

He had been dealing with calf tightness and Achilles tendinitis, but the Stanford standout was confident about his availability heading into week one. Instead, former undrafted free agent Jordan Mason got his first career start and had 147 yards and a touchdown.

Having the IR designation, Christian McCaffrey will miss at least the next four contests. His availability will be reassessed in mid-October. While there is a good chance all will be fine come week six, San Francisco has its eye set on the Lombardi Trophy in New Orleans and CMC will be an integral piece in getting there.

In the meantime, San Francisco will have to find a way to manage with just Brock Purdy, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, and Deebo Samuel.

James Cooked

The Buffalo Bills took control of the game within the first half, going into the break leading 24-10. They were headlined by an outstanding performance by second-year back James Cook. The Georgia product scored three touchdowns in the first half. Cook is continuing to carve out a substantial role in this reorganized Buffalo offense.

Out of the half, the Bills would cruise to a 31-10 victory, starting the season 2-0.

It is Not a Party in Miami

Miami escaped Jacksonville with a victory last week only because of the Jaguars ineptitude. This week, their defense was gashed and Josh Allen only threw for 139 yards. Additionally, Tua Tagovailoa had three interceptions, one of which being a pick-six to former undrafted free agent Ja’Marcus Ingram.

Tagovailoa suffered yet another concussion, and this one was scarily reminiscent of his terrifying injury against the Cincinnati Bengals two years ago.

Tua also suffered a head injury against the Bills a week prior to the one versus Cincinnati. An independent neurologist later deemed it a back injury. However, after a brief investigation, the NFL fired the neurologist. With that considered, Tua Tagovailoa has effectively suffered four concussions in the last two years.

In July, the Dolphins inked a four-year $212.4 million extension with the Alabama product. He contemplated retirement after his 2022 campaign and you’d have to imagine the same conversation will be had again.

Omaha in Winston-Salem

Just a mile from Wake Forest’s campus, at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Peyton Manning and Tracy Wolfson took the stage to talk about life and sports.

Wake Forest Students, local high school football teams, and die-hard Peyton Manning fans packed the venue last night. It is not every day that the ‘Sheriff’ comes to town, so it’s no wonder why there was a buzz in the air.

As far as conversation goes, Tracy jumped right into football and it carried the tone of the conversation. However, being the two fantastic professionals that they are, Manning and Wolfson were able to extract core life values and beliefs from the simplest of football stories.

What Fun is a Linear Life?!?

One of the first topics of the night was adversity. Despite his extensive successes in his playing career, Peyton Manning went through some intense adversity.

In 2011, Manning underwent multiple neck surgeries, leaving his football future uncertain. The following offseason, the Colts drafted Andrew Luck and released Manning, who was left with nerve damage in his throwing arm – and without a home.

Despite his throws losing some velocity, Manning’s dedicated preparation would always set him apart. He may not have been the most talented player on the field, but he was always the most prepared.

The choice to go to the Denver Broncos was quite easy for Peyton Manning. The Broncos were a quarterback away from contending and were willing to let Manning bring in parts of his Colts playbook.

Manning explained how the setbacks of his journey were crucial to his personal growth. We may rarely want to admit it, but failure and adversity are the single greatest way to grow and learn about ourselves. If it were not for his detrimental neck injury, Peyton Manning would not have brought the city of Denver it’s long-awaited third Lombardi Trophy, nor would he have had his 2013 MVP season that most regard as the single-greatest offensive performance in NFL history (5,477 passing yards and 55 passing touchdowns – both current NFL records).

Team on 3 1…2…3 TEAM!

Leadership and coaching are the backbones of any group. Peyton emphasized a good leader is one who never points fingers, doesn’t raise their voice, gives respect across the board, and puts it all on the line. Basically, I described Colts legendary coach Tony Dungy. Manning would agree, because that is exactly who he brought up when asked about leadership.

Manning emphasized that leadership is about paying it forward and guiding those around you. He also noted that even the best leaders need coaching themselves – learning is a lifelong process.

A great leader, as established, isn’t always vocal but potentially willing to go the extra mile. Edgerrin James was the Colts running back from 1999-2005. He was an electrifying player and was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame. Peyton recounted when James was always willing and frankly excited to go out and set blocks for his teammates, despite that not being in the typical job description for a back.

Leadership takes many forms – through motivation, coaching, game planning, or even subtle actions like setting blocks. Sometimes the smallest of actions can inspire those around you.

May I Have Your Complete and Undivided Attention?

Peyton Manning mentioned few people in his conversation, but Emmanuel Sanders was one of them. Sanders was a Broncos legend and an instrumental piece to their Super Bowl 50 run.

The story went like this: In a game, Emmanuel came up to Peyton and told him about the amount of separation he was getting on short routes and how it needed to be exploited. The next play was called as a run, however, Manning got up to the line and called an audible. He snapped the ball and hit a wide-open Sanders for about 15 yards.

The 15 yards were great, but it was the connection between the two that is important. Manning stressed the importance of active listening in building trust and communication. As a quarterback, listening to teammate, like Sanders, meant all the difference in moments of execution.

Parenting 101

Through listening to Peyton Manning talk, you would quickly learn that his father Archie is his hero – he repeatedly mentioned him throughout the night. Archie was a standout quarterback at Ole Miss and a New Orleans Saints legend. He retired from the NFL when Peyton was eight years old. One thing that he will always remember is that his dad was at all of his sporting events and functions. Such a seemingly small detail is something that is forever engrained in Manning.

It is the little things, truly. Archie could have done other fulfilling things but chose to support his kids. It may seem as an obvious duty of a parent, but that is not the reality with many families. Peyton’s kids are both in eighth grade and he is following through on his promise as a father.

As many know, Peyton and Eli Manning host an alternative Monday Night Football ‘Manningcast’ on ESPN 2. When he was pitched the idea by ESPN, he did not want to consistently be away from his family. However, the brothers were offered to do it remotely from their homes in Colorado and New Jersey. Peyton said how he can go to his daughter’s volleyball match at 3:00 and be home in time to broadcast with his brother.

Disclaimer: We all know Peyton Manning is known for his commercials, and I can confidently confirm they are not going anywhere. He said to be on the lookout for more this fall!

Curiosity Complacency Killed the Cat

Peyton Manning-led teams suffered losing seasons only twice in his 17 playing seasons. He won an NFL-record five MVPs, two Offensive Player of the Year awards, and was selected as an All-Pro ten times and a Pro Bowler 14 times. He went to three Super Bowls, winning two. If Peyton Manning knows one thing, it is how to be a winner.

Manning explained that success puts a target on your back. As a result, fictitious quotes from opponents would be posted on the locker room bulletin board to keep the competitive fire burning.

Historically, Peyton Manning was not a trash talker. He may have screamed at a few teammates and opponents over the years, but that’s the competitive spirit. He mentioned how time spent trash talking is time not spent preparing for the next drive. His philosophy was to celebrate a touchdown, high five the guys on the sideline, then sit down and work on how to do it again. The most driven people have an insatiable hunger for success.

Manning acknowledged how his brother Eli’s calm demeanor—never getting too high or too low—taught him the value of staying even-keeled through wins and losses. As Dory from Finding Nemo would optimistically say, “Just keep swimming”.

Dare to be Different

“Do not follow where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and make a trail.”

Although Manning did not use this quote during the conversation, it is ever-relevant. His father and brothers, Eli and Cooper, all went to Ole Miss.

Manning trusted his instincts when he chose Tennessee over Ole Miss, despite the public backlash. He emphasized that blazing your own trail often invites criticism, but the key is making the decision right, rather than worrying if it is.

Ahead of Manning’s senior season, most anticipated him to declare for the NFL draft, as he would likely be the top selection. However, similar to his decision to go to Knoxville for college, he stayed for his senior season. He had already gotten his degree and was injury free; from an outsider’s perspective, he had no reason to stay.

Peyton had the opportunity to meet with Tim Duncan after a Wake Forest basketball game. Manning asked Duncan why he stayed at Wake Forest for his senior year. Duncan simply replied that he liked it there and wasn’t ready to leave.

That was the nail in the coffin for Manning, and his decision led to his best season at Tennessee, where he became a Heisman runner-up to Michigan’s Charles Woodson.

You do not need a concrete reason for wanting something. Sometimes the answer lies within. You may have to walk alone on parts of your journey, but many of life’s greatest treasures lie on the path untraveled.

Chiefs vs. Ravens

The reigning Super Bowl Champions defeated the Baltimore Ravens on the opening game of the season. To see my breakdown of that thriller, go here.

Packers vs Eagles

The NFL hosted its first-ever – and likely last – game in São Paulo, Brazil. The first play from scrimmage for the Eagles was a Saquon Barkley slip and fall for a two yard loss. If the NFL goes back to Brazil, it won’t be in Arena Corinthians. The South American slip n slide had media figures complaining all over the internet.

Other than that play, Barkley would steal the show and produce 132 total yards and 3 touchdowns. For the Packers, second-year receiver Jayden Reed had 4 grabs for 138 yards and a score. He accompanied that with a 33-yard rushing touchdown.

Packers QB Jordan Love went down with an injury late in the 4th quarter. It’s currently being labeled as an MCL sprain and his return timeline is unknown. Head coach Matt LaFleur has yet to rule him out for this weekend’s contest against the Indianapolis Colts. In the most probable scenario where Love is unable to suit up, recently-acquired and former Tennessee Titan Malik Willis will run the offense for Green Bay.

The Eagles went back to the states 1-0 after a 34-29 win. Despite the tough loss, the Packers look to build on their surprise appearance and success in last year’s postseason. Philadelphia is once again on a journey to get a taste of that sweet Super Bowl nectar they’ve been deprived of since 2018.

New York Football Giants Losers

The Giants lost to the Minnesota Vikings 28-6 on Sunday. But this is not the embarrassing part. “Franchise” quarterback Daniel Jones was on the lowlights twice after throwing a pick-six on a screen pass and another giveaway in the redzone.

In March of 2023, New York inked a 4-year $160 million extension with the Duke product. Since then, Jones has won one game, thrown two touchdowns, and thrown 3 pick-sixes.

This past offseason, the team decided to let former No. 2 overall pick Saquon Barkley test free agency. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, and, as you know, is thriving.

Head coach Brian Daboll said he will not be benching Daniel Jones after his abomination of a performance. Regardless, you have to feel for Giants fans.

Touchdowns…who needs ’em?!

The revamped Atlanta Falcons hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite the many states separating Georgia and Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh fans were in full force. At one point in the game, T.J. Watt was hyping up the crowd…keep in mind, this game was in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ever since Matt Ryan’s departure in 2022, the Falcons had been looking for its next guy to take charge. This offseason they finally found him. Kirk Cousins made the trek from Minnesota to Atlanta with the hopes of being the missing piece for this promising and talented squad. In week one, this was not the case.

Kirk Cousins threw for just 155 yards and a touchdown while gifting interceptions to the Steelers twice. Justin Fields filled in for an injured Russell Wilson and was the personification of “game manager”. He completed nearly 74% of his passes, threw zero touchdowns, but also zero interceptions.

The Steelers would score 6 field goals and somehow walk out of Atlanta with an 18-10 victory.

Who made cookies?

Baker Mayfield. After being cast away by the Cleveland Browns, the Oklahoma super star eventually found himself on stable ground in Tampa Bay last season. To everyone’s surprise, they won their division and hosted a playoff game. They then proceeded to demolish the Eagles who had just come off of a Super Bowl appearance the previous year. This year, he continues to prove himself.

Mayfield completed 24 of 30 passes for 289 yards, 4 touchdowns, and zero turnovers. Having by far the best QB outing of the week, Baker led the Buccaneers to a 37-10 victory over the Washington Commanders.

Over in Cleveland, things could not have gone worse. Deshaun Watson went 0-10 on passes that traveled 15 yards or further, the worst performance since the stat was first tracked in 2006. Additionally, he averaged just 3.8 yards per attempt and threw two interceptions. Cleveland was dismantled by the Dallas Cowboys 33-17.

Baker Mayfield has his squad looking hungry and might do some damage again in 2024.

Rookie QB Woes

It is a historical trend for rookie quarterbacks to not perform to their fullest in their debuts. This year is no exception. Caleb Williams (#1 pick), Jayden Daniels (#2 pick), and Bo Nix (#12 pick) all made their debuts on Sunday.

Jayden Daniels actually had a good debut, but I couldn’t make the header, “Rookie QB Woes (Minus Jayden Daniels)”. He went 17/24 for 184 passing yards. But he also had 16 carries for 88 yards and two trips to the end zone. Despite the loss, the Commanders appear to have a bright future with the 2023 Heisman winner under center.

Caleb Williams started slow against the Tennessee Titans and never did get things rolling. The Chicago Bears did pick up the victory, but not because of Williams. He completed just 48% of his passes for 93 yards (3.2 yards per attempt) with zero touchdowns. He did not turn the ball over, but his adjustment to the pros is noticeable. Despite the negatives, Caleb Williams became the first number one overall pick since David Carr in 2002 to win his debut game.

Bo Nix had Broncos Country full of hope after a stellar preseason. Things were quickly turned on their head, as Denver scored just 20 points – 4 of which being from forced safeties. Nix looked flustered and never quite settled in despite Sean Payton running a very simple playbook. The Oregon record-setter went 26/42 for 138 yards (3.3 yards per attempt), zero touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. He did find the end zone on the ground, however. Despite the years and impatience and yet another meltdown, Denver still has hope going forward with #10.

No McCaffrey, No Problem

The San Francisco 49ers took care of business against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football. They won 32-19, which was a Scorigami for all those observing.

The Jets were led by 40-year-old Aaron Rodgers, who made his first appearance since tearing his Achilles on the opening MNF game last year against Buffalo. He completed 13 out of 21 passes for 167 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception.

Christian McCaffrey was confident he was going to play until the team announced he would be inactive prior to the contest. Jordan Mason made his first career start and did not disappoint. The Georgia Tech product ran the ball 28 times for 147 yards and a touchdown.

San Francisco fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl last season. This win gets them one step closer to New Orleans for another chance at the Lombardi Trophy before their championship window closes completely.

A Necessary Evil

Last night, the officials made it an emphasis to make sure the tackles on the offensive line were legally lined up. Their helmets must be in line with the center’s belt line to ensure no unfair advantage is had. Being lined up too far back is basically the equivalent of getting an early jump on the snap.

Baltimore’s Ronnie Stanley was quickly made an example of this emphasis while Kansas City’s Jawaan Taylor seemed to continue to get away with the foul.

Many fans also pointed out that players like Taylor were jumping the snap early. Anticipating the snap is a common tactic but is hard to catch without having the privilege of a slowed replay.

Bottom line: No, Kansas City did not win because of the officials.
Could the officials have been more fair across the board? Absolutely.
The more likely scenario: We are seeing another New England Patriots situation – the Chiefs rule the land and people will make any excuse for their dominance.

Missing in Action

The Baltimore Ravens came into this season with much anticipation for their offense. Typically being characterized as one-dimensional, Baltimore finally seemed poised to have a more lethal approach. Aside from the reigning MVP, Lamar Jackson, they have Zay Flowers, Mark Andrews, and former 2,000 yard rusher Derrick Henry.

Henry ran the ball 13 times, averaging just 3.5 yards per carry. He did score, but it was a goal line situation. In November of last year, Mark Andrews fractured his fibula but was a full go for last night’s matchup. The star tight end finished with just 2 receptions for 14 yards. His backup, Isaiah Likely, reeled in 9 targets for 111 yards and a score.

Bottom line: It is week one.
While it is likely that Likely (pun intended) will carry a larger role going forward, it does not diminish the fact that Andrews has been one of the league’s most consistent and talented TEs. It has been less than a year since Andrews’ injury and I am sure that played a factor. The Chiefs defense had him neutralized, making way for Isaiah Likely to get involved. This will not be an every-week occurrence.
Derrick Henry is 30 years old. He ran the rock 629 times over his last two seasons. That kind of workload is not as realistic at this point in his career. The Ravens have their eyes set on a trip to New Orleans for Super Bowl 59, and that will require a healthy and fresh Derrick Henry to get them there.

Plug and Play

It is scary, the Chiefs truly do remind me of the New England Patriots. It never matters who is in the lineup. As long as they have Patrick Mahomes at the helm, they will be just fine. We saw solid contributions from Rashee Rice, Isiah Pacheco, Xavier Worthy, Noah Gray, and old-man Travis Kelce. Aside from Travis Kelce, many “regular” NFL fans won’t recognize those names. It reminds me of: Julian Edelman, James White, Danny Amendola, Chris Hogan, and an anchor in Rob Gronkowski.

Kansas City’s defense is led by a mastermind who should be a head coach. Steve Spagnuolo continues turn this average group on paper into elite performers, reminiscent of Bill Belichick’s magic.

Bottom line: As long as Kansas City has Patrick Mahomes, head coach Andy Reid, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, they will always be strong contenders for the Lombardi Trophy.

What is He?

Lamar Jackson looks to be in incredible shape, as his 122 rushing yards would suggest. He had a few shaky throws, as you could assume for a week one game. However, Baltimore lost because of him. On the ten yard line, with only enough time for the set of downs given, and a touchdown needed, Jackson missed two open touchdown throws. They were inexcusable and perplexing. The question that has been around since his college days and one that may always exist: Can Lamar Jackson perform when it matters most? He has two MVPs but fans are hungry for a Lombardi.

Wrap Up

We were graced by an excellent football game last night. Both teams have plenty of room for improvement and the animosity between them is already growing. We will be in for a treat if these two juggernauts meet again in January for the AFC Championship.

The Details

Jerry Jones and CeeDee Lamb inked a four year, $136 million contract extension. $100 million of it is guaranteed and he receives a wide receiver-record $38 million signing bonus. Earlier this summer, the Minnesota Vikings retained their generational WR, Justin Jefferson, on a four year, $140 million extension. Lamb earned a very comparable deal and gets the edge with his signing bonus.

Money Well Spent

Since being drafted 17th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Oklahoma product has been nothing but sensational. Last season, he reeled in 135 targets for 1,749 yards and 12 house calls. He is not the fastest guy on the field, but he is a nightmare to guard and has that extra gear to make bringing him down difficult. His pairing with Dak Prescott, who is a statistical phenom and efficiency savant, keeps Dallas formidable on offense. Now if only the Cowboys can bring back their highly-scrutinized signal caller to keep this duo alive.

Wrap Up

While it may never be Dallas’ year, they certainly did well by keeping CeeDee Lamb. He stays healthy and produces Hall of Fame numbers. We may never see them play for the Lombardi but at least they will always be fun to watch with #88 on the field.

Can We File for a Mistrial?

Aaron Judge is now the fifth player in the history of baseball to record three 50+ home run seasons. His excellence is accompanied by Alex Rodriguez, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Babe Ruth. In Judge’s rookie season he jacked 52 dingers. In 2022, he hit an AL-record 62 homers, en route to an MVP. Today, the 32-year-old is on pace for 63 home runs.

Does it Matter?

The New York Yankees last made it to the ALCS (American League Championship Series) in 2022. However, they have not been able to play for the Commissioner’s Trophy since 2009. The expectations are sky-high every year, but when does something give? The roster gets retooled with the league’s latest superstars frequently, yet nothing has changed.

Wrap Up

Many are not realizing it, but we are witnessing a generational player sweep through major league baseball. He may play for the wildly disliked Yankees, but his dominance is something to acknowledge. He is a non-problematic man who has anger issues only toward baseballs. While the Yankees may never recreate the recipe for winning, Aaron Judge will certainly find himself in Cooperstown when it’s time for Hall of Fame enshrinement.

Quick Briefing

June 17, 2023. Hall of Fame coach Bob Huggins resigns/is fired after a pair of irreparable mistakes. The means of his departure depends on which party you ask. On June 24, WVU named long-time staffer and recently-promoted assistant coach, Josh Eilert, to an interim head coaching gig. The job was to be reassessed in the off-season.

The Solution-Less Problem

Coach Eilert had just come off his first full season as the Mountaineers’ assistant and quickly became in charge of a spiraling and rapidly devolving situation in which he was only given an interim tag. He was tasked with fixing a solution-less problem and his job depended on it.
Eilert said this in reference to his unique challenge upon being appointed head coach, “I talked to coaches all summer and they’re talking about the challenges…they have one or two spots left. We had basically five guys on roster and midsummer had to figure out how to put together a competitive roster.” An issue of perspective in which WVU was a prime example of the saying, “It could always be worse”.
The 2023-2024 season was supposed to be special for West Virginia. Instead, eight players jumped in the transfer portal upon news of the coaching change.
“Be a professional…control what you can control…try to be the best version of yourself…just keep grinding.” Josh Eilert focused on these core components with the guys he had. He knew the path ahead was going to be tumultuous and his guys needed to be well-rounded. I asked Josh about his coaching philosophy. Aside from applying those messages, he never really got to form his own coaching identity.
“The way I wanted to play, we couldn’t do that…what we did better probably than any other year is we adapted to what we had.”
Eilert had to form a coaching identity over night. However, it was almost a triage-style to stop the bleeding within the program. Adaptability was the name of the game for the Mountaineers. Eilert instilled that trait into the team, as statuses were constantly changing throughout the year. The season may not have gone favorably, but the art of his coaching definitely shined through.

The Magic Lies Within

WVU’s season was one marked by a historic number of losses, but very few talk about the magic of this absurd time. Josh Eilert was able to lure Kerr Kriisa back to Morgantown after he entered the transfer portal. He was suspended the first nine games of the season due to an issue from his time in Arizona. The Mountaineers had to wait until mid-December to get their eventual scoring leader, RaeQuan Battle, and Nah Farrakhan back. They were previously prohibited from participating due to transfer rules before a judge issued a restraining order against the NCAA. This team experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. They lost by as much as 36 against Cincinnati and Texas. In a one-week stretch, however, they took down #25 Texas and #3 Kansas in Morgantown.
“We were capable of beating about anyone, but we could lose to anyone.”
Through talking to Coach Eilert, I learned that, despite this team’s inefficiencies, they truly were in battle for each other. They had each other’s backs and fought each and every day. WVU’s win against Kansas was especially memorable for Josh. They beat Kansas on “Coaches vs. Cancer” day, and Josh’s father lost his fight with cancer seven years ago. He grew up in a Kansas State-supporting household and made the school his alma mater. To be able to beat his family school’s rival as well as WVU’s rival was twice as nice.
The 2023-2024 Mountaineers will forever be tainted by their 9-23 record, but the true glory was the work that went in to field a competitive team and maintain the cohesion and brotherhood among the squad.

The Golden Rule

If you are a WVU fan, I would safely assume you are passionate about your fandom. Odds are you discuss or post online about what transpires. This year, fans were highly critical of the basketball team’s performance. That is mostly expected with a historically poor performance. I asked Josh about how he handled the sometimes harsh criticisms that were thrown around online:
“I wanted to win more than anyone…I was hard on myself, so to be in that vacuum and see all that negativity…it wasn’t good for my mental health.”
He added that assistant coach Jordan McCabe actually took over his social media and changed his password, noting it as a greatly beneficial action.
“People don’t realize how distracting it is for the program, and especially for young adults 18 to 21 years old…it affects me, 43 years old…but for an 18 to 21 year old it certainly weighs a lot heavier.”
Having passionate fanbases is certainly a double-edged sword. Our favorite teams are filled with kids. These guys are not that far removed from high school and just want to make a name for themselves and their team. Coaches, for the most part, fight tirelessly to put their guys in the best position to win. Coach Eilert is a prime example of that kind of class-act coach. The fans want nothing but the best for the organization, but it’s just that, they want nothing but the best. Josh Eilert had always dreamt of being a head coach in a “fairytale situation…going up on a podium and getting a long-term contract.” His dream came true, but in the most unconventional and testing manner possible. Now an assistant coach for the University of Utah, he works to re-climb the mountain-this time in a more natural and permanent manner. His whirlwind of a time as WVU’s head coach was not in vain, though.
“The record sometimes doesn’t speak for the life lessons that everybody took from that whole situation…there’s gonna be that 9-23 stamped on my forehead, but for me it was an incredible growth opportunity.”
Sometimes, the best things come from where you’d least expect them. Life throws us curveballs and we have two choices: roll with the punches and grow or let life’s unpredictability beat us down.
Josh Eilert experienced something unique that few, if any, can ever add to their resume. Because of this and his love for the game and players, he will once again be called “head coach”. This time, however, there will be no interim tag. He will be at the podium and happily accept his long-term contract.

Riding the High

In January, J.J. McCarthy led the Michigan Wolverines to a perfect National Championship season. In April, the Minnesota Vikings traded up to secure the future of their franchise at pick 10. This past weekend, the 21-year-old went 11/17 for 188 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. While he was unlikely to open the season as the starter, McCarthy quickly showcased his passing abilities, which were frequently shelved by Michigan’s run-heavy scheme.

Back in No Time

J.J. McCarthy had been complaining of right knee soreness, and an MRI confirmed a meniscus tear. He underwent a complete repair of the damaged cartilage. The Vikings’ future signal caller took to X (Twitter) to shed light on the grim situation:

Being the target of much baseless criticism, McCarthy looks to continue shining after a speedy recovery. He will have Minnesota in a good position once the chemistry between him and fellow receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison has been built. The Scoop

Haason Reddick started his career as an Arizona Cardinal. After his rookie contract, the Cardinals let him walk in free agency, leading him to sign with the Carolina Panthers for a season. Then it appeared he found his forever home with the Philadelphia Eagles. This, however, is where the turmoil began. Reddick requested a trade from the Super Bowl runners up, and his wish was granted with a plane ticket to New York four months ago. A new contract extension has not been reached between the two sides and the situation has reached a head…or has it?

Restoring Power

“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report.”
Jets General Manager Joe Douglas fired back at Haason Reddick in an unprecedented response. We are seeing a similar cat-and-mouse game in San Francisco with Brandon Aiyuk as players continue to gain power in recent years. The Jets are at least attempting to have the former Temple Owl honor the rest of his contract. How this really unfolds could be a very different story, though.

Wrap Up

The NFL needs balance. Franchises should not walk all over players, but the players also should not get their every wish granted. When one side attempts to play hardball we usually see an agreement in the middle. However, we rarely see a stern and assertive response like what was issued today. Maybe we will see a shift in the forces going forward.

Are We Sure About This?

In the 2024 NFL Draft, we saw a historic run on signal callers in the first round. Half of the first twelve selections were all quarterbacks. There has been a growing stigma around these early selections, as teams seem to be overreaching in an effort to solidify the cornerstone of their franchise. This year is a prime example of what critics are saying, but will they be proven right? Week one of the preseason gave us a glimpse at what the future of the NFL may look like.

Short and Sweet

The top three picks in the draft were given a combined 13 passing attempts this week. While the sample size is microscopic, let’s have fun and overanalyze!
Chicago’s Caleb Williams went 4/7 for 95 yards and added a 13-yard scramble as well. He did have the chance to showcase some of his improvisation skills, though. However, time will tell if his abilities will translate to marks in the win column for this desperate Bears team.
Washington’s Jayden Daniels threw a whopping three passes, one of which was a 42-yard dime down the right sideline to Dyami Brown. To cap off his only drive, the LSU product would hit pay dirt on a 3-yard rush. The 2024 Heisman winner has quickly begun clearing the grey skies in our nation’s capital.
Finally, we head to New England with the former Tar Heel Drake Maye. He would get one drive, going 2/3 with 19 yards. A very typical drive, but the attention was on the Patriots’ other rookie QB, Joe Milton. He shined when given the opportunity with a touchdown and a showcase of improvisation. It’s now in Maye’s hands to turn the camera back to him next week.

Maybe They Weren’t Crazy…

With the twelfth pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos surprised many and selected Oregon QB Bo Nix. He is already 24 years old and had been highly scrutinized throughout his college journey. Nonetheless, Broncos head coach Sean Payton said he was the guy. In his preseason debut, he actually had a chance to establish himself and did not disappoint. He went 15/21 for 125 passing yards and a score, as well as tacking on 17 rushing yards. Nix led the Broncos on four scoring drives, which have been hard to come by in Broncos Country. Payton and the Broncos have pledged to be patient with rolling Bo Nix out as the starter, but this is certainly promising for a franchise that has yet to find an identity since Peyton Manning’s departure in 2016.

The future is bright…for all of us, but maybe even these quarterbacks too! We have a lot of football ahead of us, with many stories to unfold. Caleb Williams will continue working on silencing his doubters, while Bo Nix is proving age is just a number. Do Ya Like Stats?

Dak Prescott is a statistical specimen. His efficiency and production are often overlooked, even though very few signal callers in history can match his dominance. Below is a chart comparing the last 45 games of Dak Prescott’s and Patrick Mahomes’ careers.

What you’ll notice is that these two are very evenly matched. Dak Prescott, the man who gets the blame for Dallas’ playoff woes, has a very comparable stat line to an all-time great.

Of course this does not tell the story. You and I both would choose Patrick Mahomes and not think twice. Plus Mahomes has a lot more hardware to back up his case for greatness. However, we can agree that a franchise’s problem does not produce at this level.

The Spotlight is Hot

When you play for the Dallas Cowboys, the fans expect nothing less than Super Bowls. It is completely unrealistic yet it is somehow the standard. The easy scapegoat for a fan base is the quarterback. Just like when gas prices go up and we all blame the President. Dak Prescott may not be Tom Brady in the playoffs, but his defense let up 48 points in last year’s meltdown against Green Bay. Winning the Super Bowl takes 60 minutes of execution from all units of the team.

Time Will Tell

Dak Prescott is due for a contract extension and will reset the quarterback market. The question is, though, will this contract come from Dallas? Fans want him gone if this year goes awry, but if they let him walk they can kiss their esteemed title of “America’s Team” goodbye. We are seeing teams fork up huge contracts for their quarterbacks because the disparity between guys like Dak Prescott, Tua Tagovailoa, Jordan Love, Joe Burrow and the next level of talent is insurmountable. If the Cowboys part ways with #4, I wish them luck in finding another quarterback as talented as the man at the helm.

Patrick Mahomes wants championships, and money is not a top priority.
“…to be able to pay me a lot of money and keep a good team around me,” Mahomes said in reference to his contract situation with the Chiefs.
Since the beginning, the two-time MVP has always been about winning, and by not demanding a record-setting restructure, he respects his original deal and allows Kansas City to re-sign superstars like Chris Jones and Travis Kelce. Now let’s be transparent here, Patrick Mahomes is by no means hurting for money. His average annual salary is $45 million, and he receives plenty more in endorsements. However, it is refreshing to see an all-time great recognize winning is a team effort that requires distributed wealth among the team.

Round of Applause Please

In his first season as a starter, Patrick Mahomes threw for 5,000 yards, 50 touchdowns, won MVP, and led the Kansas City Chiefs to an AFC Championship matchup in which they narrowly fell short to the Brady-led Patriots. At 28 years old, he is going into his seventh season as the starter with six consecutive Conference Championship appearances, four Super Bowl appearances, and three Super Bowl victories under his belt. The Texas Tech product will go down as the greatest quarterback in the history of football and has already changed the game forever. You rarely see the best players in their respective sports take “team-friendly” financial approaches. It has been a mutually beneficial decision, and Mahomes looks to lead the Chiefs to an illustrious three-peat this February.

Not One, Not Two, but…

Three. United States gymnasts hold the top three spots for all-around performance in the qualifying round. Simone Biles ranks first, Suni Lee second, and Jordan Chiles third. Chiles will not qualify for Tuesday’s all-around final as only two athletes per country can advance. Talk about suffering from success. Lee and Chiles were neck and neck, with Lee getting the edge by 0.067 points. The United States leads all other countries with 172.296 points, in front of Italy’s second-place 166.861 points.

Who Needs a Left Calf Anyways

During warmups, it was reported that Olympic phenom Simone Biles suffered a calf injury. After largely withdrawing herself from the 2020 Tokyo games for mental health reasons, it was certainly a scare to see Biles’ leg heavily wrapped ahead of her performances. But as we continually see, the greatest never waver in the face of injury or adversity. She is the overall top scorer in the qualifying round, is the leader in the vault and floor exercises, and modestly holds second place on the balance beam.

It is wonderful to see Simone Biles performing, as there simply is no other gymnast like her. She is one of the greatest athletes to grace this planet, and we are lucky to be witnessing her brilliance. The United States team looks to snag gold, and Simone Biles will be her squad’s main catalyst.

Tenacious Tua

Tua Tagovailoa has never had a losing season. He has a better career interception and completion percentage than Josh Allen. Tua also has a better touchdown percentage than Jalen Hurts. Clearly, the Alabama product stacks up well with the league’s best signal callers, yet he never gets the credit he deserves.

What Gives?

The unconventional, left-handed quarterback from Alabama, who historically produces NFL stars at every position but quarterback. Tua is not a huge media person and plays for a team that’s recent history has been poor but also sits in a fairly large spotlight. However, he has quietly produced and has this Dolphins team in a position to make their deepest playoff run in decades.

It takes time. Josh Allen was statistically terrible to start his career in Buffalo, yet he is now on the path to legend status. If Miami wanted any shot at winning, they did the right thing in extending Tua. He had his first fully healthy season, and I look for him to excel this year.

The King and his People

LeBron James has transcended the game of basketball. He is beyond a household name. James is a hero to many, often regarded as King James. Regardless of your stance on him as a player or person, everyone should recognize his impact on basketball. In his first Olympic appearance since 2012, LeBron made waves by joining the team. He, alongside his other Team USA teammates, is out to show the world USA dominance.

Wrap Up

LeBron James is a pillar of basketball, easily being the sport’s biggest ambassador. He is a generational talent that is a true testament to the athletic dominance the Olympics attempt to showcase. Unlike Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, James is a man of the people. Basketball, for him, is about collaboration and making a broader impact beyond just winning games. The choice to have LeBron as the flag bearer is an obvious one. This will be his last Olympics, and outside of soccer, there is not a more well-known or inspirational athlete across the globe.

End of an Era…Nevermind

From 2017-2023, the Houston Astros finished first in their division six out of seven times, going to four World Series, and winning two. It seemed with the retirement of the legendary Dusty Baker, the team might finally fall back down to earth. The 2022 world champions had an abysmal 14-25 record to start the year. Then the Astros did what they do best: defy the odds and make MLB fans frustrated.

Sorry, Not Sorry

Since May 11, the Houston Astros have gone 38-22, taking over first place in the American League West division. As we enter the final stretch of the MLB season, it seems like Houston will only continue to excel.

Wrap Up

The last time the Houston Astros did not make it to the American League Championship Series was 2016. With the way they are currently playing, it doesn’t seem like their intention is to end that streak. They may not be as dominant as in previous years, but I can assure you no one will want to play them in October.

Money, Money, Money

The wide receiver market in the NFL has boomed recently, which really is an understatement. The league’s highest-paid wideout, Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson, has an average annual salary of $35 million. Brandon Aiyuk’s teammate, Deebo Samuel, has an average annual salary of $23.85 million. The market is only going to continue to rise, with Dallas’ CeeDee Lamb likely to reset it.

San Francisco, We Have a Problem

The Arizona State product only had 105 targets last season. However, he reeled in 75 of them for 1,342 yards and seven scores. He also had the league’s best yard per target of 12.8. ESPN’s advanced wide receiver metrics rate Brandon Aiyuk as the NFL’s best at the position in 2023. Aiyuk has made his case for a new contract, but that is not the issue between him and the 49ers. General Manager John Lynch has set the offer at $26 million per year and has not budged. Their star wideout reportedly wants a pay of around $30 million. Aiyuk has been very vocal about his frustration, even talking about the teams he would like to play for outside the Bay Area. The pressure mounted and now the 26-year-old All-Pro wants out.

Negotiation Tactics 101

There are few better places to play football than with the San Francisco 49ers. There are also few better receivers than Brandon Aiyuk. If San Francisco follows through with Aiyuk’s request, they have full control of where he goes. We have seen this story many times, especially with the five-time Super Bowl champions. Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, and Trent Williams all went through similar situations with this team. They all ended up with their desired deals. This appears to be classic hardball negotiations. Aiyuk has leverage and is using every ounce of it. But who knows, maybe the 49ers will willingly find a trade partner.

I believe the two sides realize they need each other. San Francisco will likely cough up the cash and all will be happy. They want another shot at a Super Bowl and this is their chance. Championship windows are often open for a short time, and the braces on this one are soon to fall off. It is do-or-die in Santa Clara, so we’ll see how they pan out in 2024.

Unconventional Times = Unconventional Methods

Quinn Meinerz came from a Division 3 football team, Wisconsin-Whitewater. Lower division schools rarely produce NFL players, plus his senior season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To showcase his talent to scouts and the world, Meinerz posted videos of himself working out in the woods of Wisconsin. Not only were the videos impressive, but also highly entertaining. He gained the attention of the football world, even leading to his appearance in the important Senior Bowl that showcases the country’s best prospects. He was selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos where the legend of the Belly would be born.

Let The Belly Breathe!

Number 77 for the Broncos quickly became a fan favorite during his rookie minicamp. He was constantly seen with his belly hanging out of his jersey. The Denver altitude often affects newcomers and opposing teams, and the story is no different with Meinerz. He said the altitude was a major adjustment and went on to say, “That’s why the belly was breathing a little too much yesterday.” And thus, the legend was born. Quinn Meinerz not only became wildly popular within the fanbase for his awesome nickname and attitude but also proved to everyone that The Belly is one of the NFL’s best guards.

July 13, 2024, is a day that should not have held significance. Aaron Judge broke a Yankees record, and the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team defeated Mexico 1-0 in a friendlies match. But something far more significant happened. The former President of the United States, and current Republican nominee, was shot at a rally. He was maybe a centimeter away from death or catastrophic injury. At a place in which people are meant to come together, enjoy themselves, and support a cause they believe in, one person was murdered, and two are in critical condition. The former President of the United States was almost assassinated yesterday evening.

STOP

Already, people are using this moment not to form unity in a divided time, but rather to divide further. Our country is in the midst of massive internal turmoil, and we recognize that every day. However, we continue to act as if we don’t have common ground. We are all humans just trying to get by. We are all Americans-living in the land of opportunity and freedom, yet you wouldn’t know it. Whether you align with the Democrats, Republicans, Independents, or you don’t have an affiliation, I can say with absolute certainty we all agree on one thing: we want unity. This is the moment to act, in times of distress and hurt. We all have opinions but we must not let them divide us. Rather than spread the poison that politics have become, spread love. We get so caught up in the superficiality of this game and forget that what is playing out before us is detrimentally real and completely avoidable.

Be kind to your neighbor. Think twice before you hit post. Learn to agree to disagree and leave it at that. Work to find common ground in all things in life. Spread love, not hate. Remember, we are all just humans, regardless of political affiliation.

Significance

The NCAA Football fans have been deprived of new-release-sustenance dating back to the summer of 2013. With the announcement of a new game this summer, fans were elated to see their favorite teams and players featured in the release. However, they quickly learned that big-name prospect Arch Manning would be opting out of appearing in the game. He was the only major athlete to do so.
The report said he wanted to be, “…focused playing football on the field.”

Fallout and Reversal

This seemingly baffling move was met with absurd criticism and many people questioning his character. Many of the top criticisms included the fact that being in the game does not directly distract you and that opting in only gives you more name exposure. On July, 9, Manning would reverse his decision with the announcement being made through an entertaining video featuring his uncle, Eli.

Wrap Up

What if the Manning family had a plan with Arch opting out of this historic new release? The family has a lot of pull and the announcement came at a timely moment upon the game’s release. It was reported that Arch received anywhere from $50,000 to $60,000 for the advertisement that was posted, far exceeding the standard compensation of $600 and a free copy of the game for opting in. Sometimes you’ve got to look at the big picture, and to me, it looks like Arch Manning was playing chess while everyone was playing checkers.

Team USA

On Monday, July 8, Cooper Flagg played in the Team USA vs USA Select scrimmage. The spotlight once again found the freshly graduated high schooler and likely will not be relinquishing its focus. To play against and be around the likes of LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant is something beyond beneficial and certainly memorable.

High School

Flagg holding a prominent spot in basketball media is no mistake, however. The Newport, Maine native transferred to the prestigious Montverde Academy in Florida after his freshman season. Most recently, he led his squad to a 30-0 record and took home the honor of Gatorade Player of the Year. His season (per-game) stat line is as follows: 16.1 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.7 blocks, 1.7 steals. Cooper Flagg was the number-one recruit from the class of 2024 and looks to dominate in his likely single season with the Blue Devils.

NBA Hopes

The 6′ 9″ small forward is as versatile as they come. He is an elite finisher at the rim, with ambidextrous abilities. He can shoot the mid-range and even from three. Defensively he may be even more impressive. Flagg can legitimately guard positions one through five and will unapologetically ruin your highlight by blocking anything that comes his way. Now what are his weaknesses? He just needs to work on the small details; smooth out his jump shot, create better separation, and tighten up his dribbling. These are things that will easily be polished during his year in Durham.

Paul Skenes has started ten games this year. Eight were quality starts, meaning he pitched six or more innings while allowing three or fewer earned runs. He has a 5-0 record, 2.12 ERA, and 78 strikeouts through 59.1 innings pitched. If you want to get more analytical, he has a WHIP (Walks + Hits per inning pitched) of 1.01, which is exceptional. In Strikeouts per Game, Strikeouts per Walk, and Walks per Game, Skenes ranks top-10 in the Majors.

Throwing stats at you may not do justice to Paul Skenes’ excellence. He starts games throwing 102 mph fastballs and ends them with his 100th pitch still hitting 102 mph. Skenes is making waves through the league and making many MLB Insiders angry because he very well may start the All-Star game. If you have people mad at your success then you know you are winning.

Are you ready for a laundry list of records? Here they are: Clark has scored more points than anyone else in college basketball’s history (both men’s and women’s leagues). She holds the record for the most points in a single season (second in the men’s league) and the highest points per game in women’s history. She has made the most three-point field goals in a season (both leagues) and the most three-point field goals in a career (second in the men’s league). Caitlin Clark owns a handful of NCAA Tournament records and was featured in the last two National Championship games. The hype around her is definitely warranted.

League Explosion

While Clark is getting attention, is it amounting to anything? To say yes would be an understatement. For the 2023 season, the WNBA averaged 462,000 viewers. In 2024, that number shot up to 1.32 million. Maybe that was not all because of Cailtin, but consider this: in 2023, her team had the league’s second-worst average attendance at just 4,067. This year, that number is a staggering 16,757.

Response to Critics

When something is revolutionary, people criticize it. People hate change, even when it is beneficial. Immediately after entering the league, Caitlin Clark has been the subject of scrutiny and criticism. How has she responded? In the utmost professional manner. The negativity around Clark is only fueling her and is increasing league ratings. So to all her critics, I say thank you.

Meet Mack

Matthew MacKenzie Robinson, born July 18, 1914, was the older brother of Jackie Robinson. He and his siblings grew up fatherless, moving from Georgia to California at a young age. He would be diagnosed with a heart murmur, eliminating his hopes of playing contact sports. Track & field became his best option for recreation. Thankfully, he excelled, setting national records for junior college. His talent ended up leading him to the 1936 Olympic Games in Hitler’s Berlin, Germany.

1936 Games and Jesse Owens

The 1936 Olympic Games will forever live in infamy. The games were in the midst of troubling times in Europe, just three years away from Germany’s invasion of Poland. Hitler’s biggest claim as Führer of Germany was Aryan supremacy, a racist and antisemitic delusion that fueled his havoc. A United States Olympic boycott was considered, but their participation proved to be much more powerful. While America was quite lacking in Civil Rights, they still sent black athletes to Berlin. Hosting the Olympic games was a chance for Adolf Hitler to show the world proof of his white supremacist claims; however, Mack Robinson, all-time Olympian Jesse Owens, and sixteen other black Americans had other plans.

0.4 Seconds From Glory

Mack Robinson received a silver medal for his world record-breaking time of 21.10 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Jesse Owens had a time of 20.70 seconds, setting the world record and winning one of his four gold medals that summer and the spotlight of derailing Hitler’s claims. The eighteen black Americans in Berlin collectively embarrassed Hitler, winning a combined fourteen medals, eight of them being gold. The results of the 1936 Olympics should never be forgotten.

Had Robinson received the same training as Owens, maybe the story would have been different. Neither Jackie Robinson nor Jesse Owens should ever be discredited. However, next time someone brings up number 42, be sure to mention the dominance and story of Matthew MacKenzie Robinson.

BLOWOUTS

No one wants to watch a blowout. Speaking for all fans, we want to see a nail-biter that keeps us on the edge of our seats. Not only does a competitive game incentivize viewers to continue watching, but it also catches the attention of non-watchers to catch the tail end of a close matchup. This underwhelming series did not deliver those results, as the average point differential per game sat just under eighteen points. Many of the games in this series were decided by the end of the first half of play. Another interesting thing to consider, and we do see this across other sports, is that Dallas fought tooth and nail to get to the finals while Boston could coast to the championship series. When the two met, Boston easily subdued their opponent. The Mavericks were a phenomenal story but lacked the experience and big-moment star power to compare to the juggernaut that is Boston.

League Parity

NBA fans have long dreamed of parity in the league, tired of watching the same handful of teams hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy every June. Well, they got their wish, but things haven’t improved. Except for 2020 and 2021, the Finals have not seen such low viewership since the San Antonio Spurs swept the Miami Heat in 2007. The last six champions have all been different teams, a trend that began after the Golden State Warriors won their third title in four years. Maybe league-dominating giants aren’t such a bad idea…

No James, No Curry, No Viewers

From 2015-2018, the Stephen Curry-led Golden State Warriors faced off against the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers. During that era, asking someone their thoughts on the series would likely elicit strong support for one franchise and bitter resentment for the other. It was dramatic; the two NBA powerhouses duke it out repeatedly. Despite saying they were sick of watching it, fans couldn’t get enough. The average viewership of these four showdowns was 19.5 million, including the 2018 series where Golden State dismantled Cleveland in four games. The average point differential in 2018 sat just under sixteen points. A series that was over before it even began garnered an average of almost 18 million viewers. If the stars aligned and there was some divine intervention that gave us a Curry vs James NBA Finals, I guarantee you would see viewership skyrocket.

Fans today lack the same emotional attachment to players as they did with James and Curry. While Boston’s Jayson Tatum and Dallas’ Luka Doncic have gained attention, it doesn’t compare to the hype surrounding the LeBron James and Stephen Curry era.

The reason NBA Finals viewership is in the gutter is quite simple: the games are not competitive and no well-established household names are competing to pit the NBA fanbases against each other. A rematch between the Dallas Mavericks and the Boston Celtics could help boost ratings, but until there is another matchup that gets the attention of people’s grandparents, you can count on poor viewership.

You are likely reading about phenom Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone once again breaking the 400-meter hurdles world record (she owns the top five fastest times) or that the 200-meter Olympic-likely Sha’Carri Richardson placed fourth in the trials and will not run that event in Paris. While McLaughlin-Levrone and Richardson capture headlines, another inspiring story unfolds.

Meet CJ Allen. The 29-year-old, long-time Olympic hopeful was used to coming up just short of the big event. In 2016, at just 21 years old, Allen competed, unsuccessfully, for a spot in the Rio Games. The years passed and the Washington State product continued to miss the mark. However, in 2023, CJ Allen became a part of the U.S. team and qualified for the World Championship in Budapest, Hungary. Entering this Olympic year, his 400-meter hurdles time ranked him 7th in the world. At the U.S. trials in Eugene, Oregon, Allen placed second (47.81 seconds), behind world leader Rai Benjamin (46.46 seconds). Nineteen years dedicated to hurdling led to this unmatched moment for the new Olympian. Coming in third, just one one-hundredth of a second behind Allen was Trevor Bassitt, an unsponsored product of Ashland University in Ohio. At 26 years old, he will be making his first Olympic appearance and will certainly be in line for an illustrious first sponsor.

Swimming

Katie Ledecky has stolen the swimming spotlight and will not be relinquishing it anytime soon, and for good reason. She competed in 4 events (200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 800 freestyle, and the 1,500 freestyle) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. She dominated each race, finishing first and leaving her competition out of the TV frame.

Not every swimmer, however, was in the same situation as the 10-time Olympic gold medalist. Enter sisters Alex and Gretchen Walsh, alongside brother and sister Aaron and Alex Shackell. These siblings had the pressure of the world on them to make it to Paris.

Starting with the Walsh sisters, Gretchen easily punched her ticket to Paris by setting the 100-meter butterfly world record. Despite her sister qualifying on the first day, Alex Walsh would have to wait until the second-to-last day of the trials to secure her spot on the Olympic roster. Alex totes a silver medal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 200-meter medley, while Gretchen looks to join the podium for the first time in her career.

Aaron Shackell, 19, was the first male swimmer to qualify for the Olympics by winning the 400-meter freestyle. Once again, it would not be as simple for the other sibling. Alex had to wait a week for her moment. The moment was not too big, as the 17-year-old would place second in the 200-meter butterfly, solidifying herself as an Olympian.

This duo of siblings is the first to accomplish this feat since 2004, where, ironically, a set of sisters and a brother and sister would qualify for the Athens Games.
